River Flood

We've had a very hot and rainy summer so far.  Apparently there has been a TON of melting of the snow on the mountains at a VERY rapid pace because not only here in town, but rivers all over Alberta have been flooding like crazy.  Our river, actually didn't overflow too much at all but we still wanted to go and look at it.  It was so crazy to see how big the water was.

This is normally a walking trail.  You can see all the water behind the kids. That is the trail all covered up.

There was another big added bonus (for the kids) to see and that was the silk worms.  All the trees next to river just overflow with small, green silk worms this time of year.  It is usually the time of year that I most avoid walking in the river valley.  They literally repel down on their silk strings right in front of your face and all around you.  They are so fast that sometimes they are hard to avoid and they'll end up on your head or on your shirt or whatever.  It gives me a shiver just talking about it but Gavin and Tati thought the worms were both hilarious and intriguing.  Tati wanted to touch and hold them but at the same time she was a little apprehensive about actually doing it.  So she did the next best thing:  she got Gavin to touch and hold them.  She vicariously enjoyed it this way as much as Gavin did.  I've been trying to be easy going about worms because I don't want them to have my same fears but it is hard for me to see him holding this worm and talking to it.

There was one part of the river that was overflowing the curb onto the real street.  We stood there with a bunch of people from the neighborhood watching the city water peeps taking measurements and pretty much just looking worried.  It was pretty interesting.  Every so often, a boat would drive by on the river and create big waves that sent the water cascading over the previous water lines so that was a thrill too.

The saddest part was the cement overflow was right in front of this house that had a "Sold" sign still up in their front yard.  I bet they were feeling pretty unsure of their decision to purchase a home right there.

I caught this cute picture of the girls being buddies while they were watching the water flooding.  Too bad their heads aren't opposite sizes b/c each of their hats matches the other's dress.

Guess who was floating in all the flood waters? Yup, the silk wormies. The kids could've stayed and watched for much longer but I was starting to get overwhelmed at all the worms dropping around me and getting itchy and dry heavey.
